Serbian doctors are keeping up with modern medicine

Computer modeling and 3D printing for the first artificial rib in Serbia

Using computer modeling and 3D printers doctors from Thoracic Surgery, Clinical Center of Kragujevac, together with experts from the Faculty of Engineering Sciences have reconstructed human bone and embed artificial rib which was identical as the ejected part of the rib. At the Faculty of Engineering Sciences were used 3D techniques and made a mold in which doctors from Kragujevac poured mass of medical cement reinforced with titanium armor. Transplantation of this constructed rib lasted four hours, and the artificial rib is on the one side fixed to the spinal column and on the other hand to the related part of the rib.

This is the first operation of its kind in Serbia and it represents a novelty in the world, too. Artificial implants and 3D printing in the world are already being used in various fields of medicine, for example in reconstruction of bones, tendons and other tissues, as well as for the creation of prosthetic body parts.

We hope that this trend will continue and that 3D technology will find a wider application and in local medicine, too.
