No more insulin injections nor avoiding sugar! A drug which can reverse the symptoms of diabetes in mice has been discovered.
Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder that results in hyperglycemia, ie. permanently elevated blood sugar level. Hyperglycemia arises from two reasons:
● due to low insulin level in the blood or
● reduced biological effect of insulin – one of the reasons for this is the reduced sensitivity of the receptor on the cells for which the insulin is bound. This is also one of the causes of Type 2 Diabetes.
A team of researchers from California has recently produced a drug that inhibits the enzyme LMPTP (low molecular weight protein tyrosine phosphatase) which has been shown to play an important role in the development of Type 2 diabetes in obese people.
The research team has demonstrated that a newly discovered drug acts primarily on the insulin receptor on the liver cells, the organ which in response to the insulin uptake of excess sugar from the blood. Acting on enzyme LMPTP, the drug increases the insulin receptors sensitivity and thus enables maintenance of normal blood sugar levels.
Although the drug is still being tested on animals, scientists believe that the therapeutic use of this drug could make life easier for millions of people with Type 2 Diabetes.
